When considering a shielding gas for welding aluminum, we need to consider the differences between argon and argon helium mixtures. In order to understand the effect of these gases on the welding operation, we can examine the properties of each gas in fig 1. We can see immediately that the ionization potential and the thermal conductivity of the helium shielding gas is much higher than that of argon.
