If you have collaborated on a track with another writer, and you each own 50%, the music supervisor has to clear the publishing rights for both you and your co-writer, and whoever owns the master rights. It’s because of this that, today in sync, all the rights (both sides master & publishing) are commonly controlled by one entity. This could be an individual, a label or publisher, or a sync agent. This is referred to as one-stop ( the Supervisor only has to make one stop when clearing tracks. The more people that are involved with this process, the trickier it tends to be… Once you’ve ‘cleared’, your agent will send you the license or quote request, and you can sign off! Once the show airs you’ll be paid an advance fee, commonly known as a ‘sync fee’. It’s only after this that you can collect royalties as well through your Performing Rights Organisation (PRS for Music, and PPL in the UK. ASCAP, BMI and SESAC in the US )!

Be sure to have a place on your website, or an embed in your EPK that allows music supervisors to strum through your catalog quickly. It may even be smart to set up a microsite or a new EPK just for your work that you want to try and get licensed. Another huge part of your marketing that’s overlooked is the metadata. When you get to the point of sending MP3s out to licensing executives, make sure clear meta tags such as genre, year, publisher, and artist are embedded in your tracks. Rhythm Couture artists questions and answers: In 2009, Rafi went to see a Flamenco show in LA and fell in love with that style. He wanted to surround himself in that culture and hear as much of that music as he could! So he went home and booked a flight to Seville Spain and decided to go study flamenco guitar out there. For 3 Years he went back and forth to Spain each time for periods of 6 to 7 months to Study the flamenco guitar in Seville, and he immersed himself in that music and lifestyle fully. In the end he decided not to take the traditional path. He felt that his calling was to continue with the electric guitar and to incorporate the things that he had learned into his own music doing it his way. Rafi still continues to go to Spain for inspiration and to perform there as well on occasion.
