Public speaking fear can be a huge obstacle if you want to develop your career. Here are some public speaking advices and a suggestion if you are looking for a public speaking book. Use Humor, Tell Stories, and Use Effective Language. Inject a funny anecdote in your presentation, and you will certainly grab your audience’s attention. Audiences generally like a personal touch in a speech. A story can provide that. Don’t Read Unless You Have to. Work from an Outline. Reading from a script or slide fractures the interpersonal connection. By maintaining eye contact with the audience, you keep the focus on yourself and your message. A brief outline can serve to jog your memory and keep you on task.
Try to enjoy yourself (or at least look like it!): If you look bored, then the audience will think you are bored. And if you’re bored by the topic, then why should anyone listening be interested? When you come out, have a smile on your face, make it seem like your happy and thankful to be there (even if you’d rather be in bed watching Netflix). If you feel confident enough to do so, add a little humour (as long as it’s appropriate). This will help you and your audience relax, and break the ice if the room is feeling a little tense or unfriendly. Read extra info Public speaking course.
Take long pauses. Similar to slowing things down, make a point to take long pauses. And make them longer than you even think is appropriate. It can have a great impact on emphasizing key points and emotionally connecting to the audience. Practice tone and projection. Don’t just eek your way through a speech using the same tone and volume. Tone and projection add a layer of entertainment and help keep the audience fully engaged from start to finish. These too must be practiced religiously.
What people say ? You should also remain true to yourself and not try to be someone else during speaking events. There is a ridiculously silly & funny video clip link embedded in the book that illustrates this point quite well. Mike then presents seven strategies to help the reader get over the fear of speaking. He weaves in stories and anecdotes drawn from his own experience in the art of public speaking. He also adds beautiful quotes that can be extracted and used in the readers’ daily lives. My favourite ones are Strategies #4 and #7. The one strategy helps the presenter to speak to large crowds. Big crowds can appear quite intimidating. The other one takes the reader through an intense preparatory process. Mike gives an example of how he drives his teams on the latter but also how he lets go after the process & expresses gratitude for work done. Redefine your audience: Redefine your audience generally means changing how you see your audience. Instead of seeing them as lecturers who are evaluating you, maybe you can convince yourself that they are all fellow students who are in queue to present after you. They are all equally nervous so there is no reason why you should be too. Or perceive them as long lost friends that you haven’t seen for 10 years. This way you can maintain eye contact trying to figure out where you have seen him before. To the audiences, they will see a very friendly and personal presentation.
