A popular peninsula in southern Belize, Placencia has the best mainland beaches, plus some of the most amazing offshore coral cayes. The eastern side of the Placencia Peninsula is a long expanse of white sand beach. The western side is bounded by a long and narrow bay. The beautiful beaches together with the abundant, inexpensive accommodation, make it a great place to relax and one of the attractions in Belize.
Nestled in lush jungle on the banks of the New River, Lamanai is the most famous archaeological site in northern Belize and one of its largest ceremonial centers. Lamanai means “Submerged Crocodile” in the Mayan language, and images of crocodiles have been found on the excavated buildings, pottery, and figurines. Traveling to the site is an adventure in itself. An hour boat ride up the New River provides frequent wildlife sightings, and the dense jungle lends a wild feel to these ruins, which are still not completely excavated. Lamanai was occupied the longest of any Mayan site. In the 16th century, the Spanish found a thriving community here, and the ruined churches reveal attempts to convert the Maya. The archaeological site features more than 900 structures as well as a museum with exhibits of pottery, obsidian, figurines, and jade jewelry. Highlights include the Mask Temple, Temple of the Jaguar, and the High Temple, which visitors can climb for panoramic jungle views.
Belize attractions and climate makes purchasing a property here a tempting project. Imagine living permanently there… the joy. As Ambergris Caye, San Pedro and Belize continue to grow at an unprecedented rate, as so the opportunities for Real Estate investment does as well. Central America is full of Mayan archaeological sites, with Tikal in Guatemala taking most of the recognition – perhaps we can thank George Lucas for that. However there is much to see in Belize as well for you ancient history buffs! Lamanai is one of the biggest Mayan ruin complexes in Belize, located in the north, and well worth taking your time to explore. Usually accessed via the water, you can also visit by driving in, but beware that it’s about an hour long bumpy ride along an unpaved road. Once there, you can spend hours wandering through the ruins – you may even encounter some under current excavation! Some temples even allow you to climb to the top, though be careful if you choose to do so. There is very little in the way of safety precautions. You can also stop into the nearby museum to observe some unearthed artefacts and learn about the history of the complex.
A 16-mile-long stretch of golden sands in southeastern Belize, the Placencia Peninsula is rapidly becoming the eco-tourism capital of Belize where golf carts and bicycles are the principal form of travel. The eastern side of the peninsula fronts the gorgeous Caribbean Sea while the western side forms a mangrove-lined lagoon brimming with fish and other species. Whether you’re using Placencia as a jumping off point to popular destinations on the Belize Barrier Reef or simply as a great place to relax, the Placencia Peninsula is definitely a must see destination.
